Are there limits to how much money can be refunded?
Cash refunds have a maximum net payout of $250 per person. Check and PayPal are unlimited.

How long refund payments take via check and PayPal?
Processing time is typically 90 to 120 days under normal customer traffic conditions. More complex applications and/or peak seasons may affect refund completion time.

Can refunds be put on credit cards?
No. Refunds to credit cards are currently unavailable.

How much is the processing fee?
Cash: 50% of total sales tax on the refund application
Check: 35% of the tax we are able to collect plus $4.00 per physical store location
PayPal: 35% of the tax we are able to collect plus $4.00 per physical store location

What is the minimum amount that qualifies for a sales tax refund?
A $12 minimum of sales tax per physical store is required. Receipts from the same physical store may be combined. Example: 2 receipts from the Gap in NorthPark Center with $6 of sales tax each may be combined to achieve the required $12 minimum of sales tax. Receipts from Gap NorthPark and Gap at the Galleria may not be combined because they are not the same physical store.

Can sales tax refunds be requested after departing the USA?
No, Texas law requires you must request your refund before departing the USA.

When should purchases be made?
Purchases must be made within 30 days of date of departure from Texas. TaxFree Shopping is not liable for refunds expiring due to passage of time. To help ensure your purchased items stay eligible for sales tax refunds, it is suggested to purchase within the last 2 weeks before departure.

Can refunds be sent to someone in the United States?
Yes, a check can be sent to anyone anywhere in the world.

What if a refund did not arrive?
If a refund has not been received within 120 days, please email Status@TaxFreeShopping.com including the following information for the person that applied for the refund: full name as it appears on passport, name of country that issued passport, passport number, date of your visit, and application ID number (located below the bar code on application). Extended wait times may be influenced by retailer payment date and/or a check being lost in the mail.

The refund application asks for a home address, what if I only have a P.O. Box mailing address?
The Texas law requires a physical home address for exportation records. Fill in your physical home address on page 1, include P.O. Box under the Alternate Payment Address section on page 2.

Are there any up-front processing fees?
There are no upfront fees of any kind. Processing fees are deducted from the payment you receive. If we are unable to collect your refund from the retailer, no processing fee is charged.

Are e-mailed, reprinted, or photocopied receipts eligible?
For purchases made in a retail store, no. Texas law requires the original receipt for all purchased items. Please see ONLINE PURCHASES for further details. (16)

Are out-of-state purchases eligible for sales tax refunds?
No, TaxFree Shopping is licensed to handle Texas sales tax only.

Are restaurants, hotel bills, or rental cars eligible for sales tax refund?
No, Texas law holds that anything used or consumed while in Texas does not qualify for sales tax refund.

Do internet purchases qualify for sales tax refund?
Yes, when applying for a refund for goods purchased over the internet, purchasers must provide the shipping documentation or receipt enclosed in the package by the vendor. The shipping documentation or receipt should provide a description of the items purchased; clearly display the amount of Texas Tax collected on the sale; and indicate that the package was received by the customer in Texas. In the event that the shipping documentation included with the package does not include all of the information required, the customer may provide a receipt printed from a personal computer in addition to the shipping documentation provided by the seller.

What affects eligibility for a sales tax refund in Texas?
If an item is used in Texas, the item will lose its eligibility for a sales tax refund. For example: jewelry is eligible for sales tax refunds, however, if jewelry is worn prior to departure of Texas, it loses its eligibility for a sales tax refund.

Is there a time limit on requesting a sales tax refund?
Yes, only purchases made within 30 days* of your departure from Texas are eligible. TaxFree Shopping must also process your refund within this time frame. *Some restrictions apply. Please see WHEN SHOULD PURCHASES BE MADE? for details. (8)

Are US Citizens/Residents eligible for this refund?
Yes, anyone is eligible for a Sales Tax refund as long as the purchased items are exported and proper exportation procedures are followed. The US Constitution Article 1 Section 9 Paragraph 5 guarantees "No Tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State." Example: Christmas gifts taken to family overseas or a US Citizen living abroad may qualify.

What documents are required for a US Citizen?
A U.S. passport and boarding pass indicating you will be traveling beyond the territorial limits of the United States. These documents must be presented on the day of departure and verified at an airport location of TaxFree Shopping.

What if a store does not participate?
Retailers must register to participate through their corporate office for TaxFree Shopping to refund their customer’s sales tax. If you plan to make a large purchase at a non-participating retailer, contact TaxFree Shopping (Info@TaxFreeShopping.com) in advance so we may attempt to acquire them as a participating retailer. Communication between customers and retailers can expedite the registration process for stores. Please note this process may take time and refunds may not be immediately available. Alternatively, Participating stores may offer similar and/or the same products as non-participating stores

Why was a receipt from a non-participating store not accepted for a refund when the store told me it would be?
The sales tax refund program is optional in Texas. Retailers must first register with TaxFree Shopping before refunds can be facilitated. If a store is not on the Participating stores list, TaxFree Shopping will be unable to accept those receipts.

How do stores register to participate with TaxFree Shopping?
Click here to download TaxFree Shopping’s registration form. Once completed, send back to TaxFree Shopping via email or fax. TaxFree Shopping will promptly enter retailer’s Texas stores into its system and begin accepting store’s receipts for sales tax refunds. Email Info@TaxFreeShopping.com for more details.
